As purveyors of a top quality breakfast, we are chuffed to offer our morning visitors top quality toast toppings, handmade right here in Liverpool. Agnew & Roberts create award-winning preserves using traditional recipes with some really exciting twists. An inspired selection of jams, marmalades and chutneys are produced in limited micro-batches sans artificial additives or preservatives. The flavours evolve seasonally, but current café favourites are the Strawberry and Passion Fruit Jam and Lime and Rum Marmalade.
We chat to the guys from the A&R kitchen…
C&C: WHO IS BEHIND A&R?
A&R: We are a family business with brother and sister Phillip & Pippa and our mum, Rena.
C&C: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START A FAMILY JAM BUSINESS?
A&R: We casually started producing jams as gifts for friends and family a year or so ago and were overwhelmed at the positive response received and soon started getting requests from our family’s friends. We started to realise that we could be onto something! It became a reality with Rena’s first jar of Seville Orange Marmalade, which we entered into the World Marmalade Awards & proudly won a silver. The ball really starting rolling when Pippa entered Liverpool Food & Drink’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year and won and just a few weeks later we were in Sefton Park at one of the biggest food & drink events in the country selling our jars for the very first time – we completely sold out.
We’ve been working hard to perfect our recipes this year, reviving traditional methods and taking them to the next level pushing our flavours & techniques to produce world class luxury preserves.
C&C: WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE JAM TO DATE?
A&R: We all have our favourites, I particularly love our Strawberry & Passion Fruit drizzled over ice cream or yoghurt, Phillip loves our Kiwi & Mango Jam on toast and Rena loves our award winning Raspberry & Violet Jam. But Jams aside we all agree that our Seville Orange Marmalade makes the perfect glaze for a joint of ham.
C&C: TELL US ABOUT AN AVERAGE DAY AT A&R?
A&R: There is never an average day at Agnew & Roberts. With such a small team we’re always doing something different than we did the day before, whether its slicing citrus or talking with suppliers and stockists. When it comes to production, we schedule around the seasons so we can put the best fruit into our jars. Some of our fruits have such a short season that as soon as the fruit’s available, it’s all hands on deck (quite literally, as every jar we produce is made by hand!). But either way we do rock some lovely headscarves in the kitchen!
C&C: WE’RE LUCKY TO HAVE SOME AMAZING ARTISANS IN LIVERPOOL. WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE?
A&R: With so many people doing such a good job it was really hard to narrow it down but we’d have to say… Liverpool Gin. They’ve really brought something special to the table, plus when you combine it with our Raspberry & Violette Jam it makes the most delicious gin cocktail…
C&C: DO SHARE!
A&R: Simply pour 50ml Liverpool Gin into a cocktail shaker along with ice cubes and 2 teaspoons of our Raspberry & Violette Jam. Give it a good shake until cold and pour over crushed ice. Garnish with raspberries if you’re feeling fancy! Carrying on with the spirit theme – Whisky Business do a fantastic job of curating some of the world best whiskeys in their treasure trove of a store. They’re always our first point of call when looking for alcohols to add to our products! Lemon & Single Malt Whisky – Holla!
We love what Phillip, Pippa and Rena are doing and think Agnew & Roberts jam is super special, which is why we’re proud offer it on our artisan toast and by the jar in the café. Support a local business, apply liberally.
