We’re proud to brew Origin Coffee not only because we think it’s the best tasting coffee on the market, but for its ethos. Origin Coffee source, import and roast traceable, sustainable beans and they’ve built a strong relationship with farmers, who get a great price for their crop and look after their workers. Origin are kind to the environment, too, proudly using the world’s first environmentally friendly coffee roaster, which uses 80% less energy than any other on the market and produces next to no emissions.
We chat to Grace at Origin…
WHO’S BEHIND ORIGIN?
Origin Coffee was founded in 2004 in Cornwall by Tom Sobey. Tom had worked in the industry alongside his father and his desire to work in coffee was realised following a trip to Australia where he experienced their progressive coffee culture. Origin Coffee continues to be run by Tom and an ever-expanding team throughout the UK. Key to this team is Joshua Tarlo, our Coffee Development Manager. Joshua relocated from Canada to Cornwall to join Origin and is responsible for sourcing our coffee, developing roast profiles and QC.
WHAT’S AN AVERAGE DAY AT ORIGIN HQ?
For Joshua, the day starts with brewing espressos of our primary products to make sure everything is tasting as it should. He’ll also cup sample roasts of any new coffees to test the various roast profiles that have been developed. Joshua will then select the best profile, or construct a new one, and then discuss with our Head Roaster. The rest of the day consists of working with the wider team to discuss communications, logistics and coffee feedback, working with importers on timelines for when coffees are due in and planning future sourcing trips. Joshua also dedicates time to mentoring; recently he’s been working closely with our barista trainers competing in the forthcoming UKBC semi finals.
TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR ETHOS?
Central to our ethos is that our coffees are fairly traded. We simply choose to achieve this through direct trade rather than by going down the fair trade certified route. In terms of our direct trade, we visit the farms that supply our coffee directly (or through trusted partners). Each farm we work with is then audited ensuring that, amongst other things, the workers are paid fairly, that the coffee is produced in a sustainable way and that the environment is looked after. We then work with the farmers to calculate how much it costs them to produce the crops and guarantee they receive 30% above these production costs. This ensures that if costs rise, their margin isn’t squeezed and they’re rewarded for investing in good farming practices and producing the best crops possible. As such, everything we source is traceable and sustainable.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR ORIGIN?
We visited Central America in February and have more great sourcing trips planned. We’ll continue to source incredible coffees, including continually changing guest coffees to take people on a speciality coffee journey through country of Origin and process. 2015 is also a big year in the competition circuit for us; two of our barista trainers are competing in the 2015 UKBC semi-finals, one competing in the AeroPress championship and two in Cup Tasters. So, all in all, a busy year ahead.
